What does "verified" mean?
Being verified on social media means an account has a checkmark badge next to it, showing that it’s authentic. This started as a way to confirm that an account actually belonged to a public figure, brand, or organization, helping people spot real accounts and avoid fake ones. Platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook all use these checkmarks for verified accounts.
These days, though, many platforms allow users to pay for verification. So, a checkmark now doesn’t just mean the account has high public interest; it can also mean the user chose to verify their identity through a paid option.
For instance, if you see a checkmark next to a celebrity’s name on X, it could mean the account is confirmed as theirs, or it might simply show they’re paying for verification and added features.
