TikTok (formerly known as musical.ly) is a social media platform that allows users to create and share short videos – 15 seconds. It’s the fastest-growing social media app right now. TikTok is owned by a Beijing-based company called ByteDance, which was founded in 2012.

It allows users to create a wide range of videos such as challenges, dances, lip-syncing, magic tricks, funny videos and much more. TikTok has approximately 800 million monthly active users and it has been downloaded over 1.5 billion times.
The TikTok app offers many sounds and song snippets and users have the option to add special effects or filters. Just like on any other social media platform people can get followers, likes, views, and shares.
Basically, TikTok has simplified and taken video creation to the next level. Celebrities are also hopping on this trend and they are crushing the TikTok game. Jimmy Fallon is a great example, he started a challenge in November 2019 that went viral and gathered more than 8,000 entries and 10.4 million engagements.
Celebrity and influencer partnerships are a key part of TikTok’s expansion strategy. Not to mention that many brands are realizing the huge potential of TikTok as a channel to market their products or services.
Another key factor in TikTok’s popularity is localized content. The app comes up with different contests and challenges in order to pick up local trends with the help of localized hashtags.
