What is Open Graph?
Open Graph is a protocol that social media platforms use to control how links to websites are displayed when shared online. It allows website owners to define specific metadata (title, image, description) that will show up when they share a link on Facebook, X, or LinkedIn.Â
For example, if you share an article from a news site on Facebook, the Open Graph tags on that article will tell Facebook what image to show, what title to use, and what description to use for the link. Without Open Graph tags platforms will pull random or incomplete information and your shared link will look messy or ugly.
If you’re using a content management system like WordPress, plugins like Yoast SEO or All in One SEO Pack can automatically insert and manage these tags for you. Website builders like Wix and Squarespace often have built-in options to handle Open Graph metadata without any coding.Â
For custom websites, there are online generators that create the necessary code for you to paste into your site’s HTML. So, various tools are available to simplify the process and make it easier to control how your content appears when shared on social media.
