What is pinning?

Pinning means to lock a post, tweet, or comment to the top of your social media profile or page. So even as new content is added, the pinned item stays at the top and is the first thing people see.

For example, on X (Twitter) you can pin a tweet (whether it’s an announcement or a quote) so it’s always the highlight of your profile no matter how many tweets come after. On Instagram, you can pin comments or even stories so they stay top of mind in your feed.

Note that pinning on most social media platforms is different from pinning on Pinterest.

What is a pin on Pinterest?

On Pinterest, a pin means an image or video a user adds to their boards for inspiration or to share with followers. It’s more about curating and saving content rather than highlighting posts on a profile page.

Each Pin on Pinterest can link back to websites and adds an extra layer of engagement by driving traffic to external sites which is different from the static pinned posts on Twitter or Instagram.
