What does "FR" mean?

FR is an abbreviation for “For Real,” and it’s used in casual conversation or online to emphasize that you’re being honest or serious. It’s like saying, “I’m not joking,” or “I mean it.” You’ll often see people use it when they want to stress that something is true or when they’re surprised by something and want to confirm that it’s really happening.

For example, if someone says, “I just got tickets to the concert!” you might respond with, “FR?” to ask, “For real?” because you’re surprised or excited. Or, you might use it to double down on something you said, like “That movie was so bad, FR.”

It’s commonly used in texting or social media because it’s a quick, shorthand way of making sure the other person knows you’re being genuine. It’s also sometimes used in combination with other slang, like “FR, FR” to really drive the point home.

“FR” (For Real) has roots in African American Vernacular English (AAVE). AAVE has significantly influenced modern slang and internet culture, contributing many expressions that have become widely used across different communities.
